Fire grants new identity to wood panels in my larger-than-life portraits. I use a blowtorch rather than a paintbrush in my distinctive method called Open-Flame Pyrography.
My current work is comprised of large portraits burnt into planks of wood. I look at my artistic practice as collaboration with nature, using the traditionally destructive element of fire to breathe new life into an organic material.
The varied grains, knots and flaws in each piece of wood offer an infinite amount of creative opportunity. I recognize and celebrate imperfections in both the medium and in the people whose portraits I burn.
Ideas surrounding identity drive me to create; the pyrographs focus on the essence of the person while retaining physical anonymity. My work is about humanity, individuality and depth of feeling.
